Garmin has released a significant software update for its Fenix 8 series, along with the Enduro 3 and Fenix E models. Initially introduced in the Venu X1 and Forerunner 970, several advanced tools—previously unavailable on the Fenix 8—are now being added through Garmin's Public Beta program.
Among the notable additions are running economy tracking, a smart alarm, and a daily evening report, among others. The update also includes over two dozen new features and 30 stability improvements.
This new metric calculates a runner's weekly capacity by factoring in both mileage and the intensity of each workout. For example, a high-intensity 10K run could be equated to 15K of strain, helping users avoid overtraining and injury.
At the end of each day, the watch summarizes key stats, including stress levels, sleep analysis, next-day weather, appointments, and recommended workouts. This update provides a more streamlined view of daily health insights.
When paired with the Garmin HRM600 chest strap, the watch can now measure step speed loss, offering a detailed view of how efficiently a user runs. Over time, this data contributes to a comprehensive running economy score.
The smart alarm, already present in the Vivoactive 6 and Venu X1, wakes users during lighter sleep stages within a set 30-minute window. This is designed to help reduce grogginess upon waking.
A new calculator app allows users to perform basic math functions and calculate tips or split bills directly from their smartwatch.
Users can now create tailored Focus modes, deciding which notifications to allow during specific times. This builds on Garmin's existing sleep and activity focus settings.
Those enrolled in Garmin's Public Beta program can download the update immediately by selecting ‘check for updates’ from the settings menu. Enrollment is available via the Garmin Connect website.
Users should be aware that ECG and Dive features on the Fenix 8 will be temporarily disabled while using the beta version. Those reliant on these features may prefer to wait for the full public release.
The Fenix 8, priced at $1,099 on Amazon, remains Garmin’s flagship multi-sport GPS watch. With this software expansion, the device now inherits many capabilities from newer models, reinforcing its value ahead of anticipated discounts in the latter half of 2025.
